Grace M. Ellis
Grace Martin Ellis, 88, widow of Clement Robert Ellis Jr. died Saturday Dec. 27, 2008 in Mullins Nursing Center.
She was born August 17, 1920 in Marion County, a daughter of the late Whitton Albert Martin Sr. and the late Donnie Rogers Martin. Mrs. Ellis was manager of Cato’s for several years and a member of Marion Baptist Church.
Surviving Mrs. Ellis are two daughters, Bobbie Ellis Bullard of Marion and Marcia Ellis Owens of Marion; two grandchildren, Kevin Williamson and his wife Jennifer and Darren Bullard and his wife Kim; four great-grandchildren, Greyson Williamson, Kristin Henderson, Kolin Bullard and Kimberlin Bullard; two brothers, John D. Martin and his wife Nancy of Mullins and Buddy Martin and his wife Peggy of Fort Mill; three sisters, Sug M. Fenters of Mullins, Donnie M. Hughes of Mullins and Martha M. McLane of Mullins; and several special nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Ellis was predeceased by a son-in-law, Rex Bullard; a brother, Whit Martin; two sisters, Mary Sue Blount and Dancil M. McKenzie; and a sister-in-law, Martha E. Capps.
Graveside services were on Monday, Dec. 29 in Devotion Gardens Cemetery, with the Bishop Joe Grice officiating.

Joseph P. Huggins
Joseph P. Huggins, 76, of Blackshear died on Dec. 24, 2008 in Statilla Regional Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Mullins to the late John Lawton Huggins and Lucille Wiggins Huggins.
Mr. Huggins graduated from Presbyterian College, where he was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduating from Presbyterian College, he coached one year at Warren County before moving to Waycross. Beginning in 1955, he served as a teacher and assistant football coach under head coach Dub Kendrick for Waycross High School. After coaching, he operated Hiers Timber Products for many years.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he taught the youth Sunday school class, was a member of the Sid Ruff Sunday school class, and served on numerous church committees. In the community, Mr. Huggins was a member of the Jaycees, Elks Lodge and the Okefenokee Golf and Country Club. He joined Okefenokee in 1956 and began serving on the board of directors in 1959, serving several times as the group’s president.
He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Huggins of Blackshear; two daughters, Holli Sweat and her husband Jim of Blackshear, Jolie Chaney and her husband Jay of St. Simons Island; twin grandchildren, Taylor Sweat and Chase Sweat of Blackshear; three brothers, Norman Huggins and his wife Mary June of Valdosta, Jim Huggins and his wife Ann of Mullins and Dr. Kenneth Huggins of Walterboro; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Satilla, 317 Plant Ave., Waycross, Ga. 31501, Satilla Regional Medical Center, 410 Darling Ave., Waycross, Ga. 31501 or First United Methodist Church, 410 Williams St., Waycross, Ga. 31501.

Hope K. Corley
Mrs. Ernest Hope King Corley, widow of James E. Corley Jr., died Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 in her home surrounded by her family.
She was born June 11, 1916 in Nash, Okla., and was the daughter of the late Ernest Holliday King and Hope Howard King. Mrs. Corley graduated from Columbia College in 1937. She was an organizing member of the Drowning Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and founding member and last survivor of the Golden Girls Bridge Club. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Mullins.
Surviving are her daughter, Judith Dixon Underwood of Mullins; two sons, James Self Corley III and his wife Tina of Greenwood and Robert Howard Corley and his wife Tracey of Bluefield, W.Va.; two step-granddaughters, Christina Barger and Laura Barger, both of Greenwood; a great-grandson, Joshua Michael Collins of Belleview, Fla.; two step-great-grandsons Trey and Thad Thomas of Myrtle Beach; two great-great-granddaughters, Aurora and Velouria Collins; and Leslie D. Warwick, who was considered a special niece.
Mrs. Corley was predeceased by a brother, Ernest Howard King and a sister, Mary King.
A graveside celebration of life was on Saturday, Jan. 3 at Cedardale Cemetery, with the Rev. James A. Kirkland Jr., Dr. Lewis E. McCormick and the Rev. Kem Thomas officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Connie Maxwell Children’s Home, P.O. Box 1178, Greenwood, 29464 or to the Mullins First Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 443, Mullins, 29574.

Elise Rowell
Elise Hunter Rowell was born May 15, 1927 to the late Eugene and Carrybell Smith Hunter in Kershaw County. She was raised in Kershaw County and at the age of 18, married the late Melvin Rowell of Marion. The couple had 10 children: Vera Rowell of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Emma Irby of Rock Hill; Cleveland Rowell of Albany, N.Y.; Edward Rowell of Brooklyn, N.Y., and the late Hazel, Theresa, Loretta, Melvin Jr. Josephine, and JB Rowell.
In 1974, Elise moved to New York City to be closer to her children. She is survived by her sister Dora Lee King of Marion.
A funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Jan. 3, 2009 in the Jackson & McGill Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Henry McGill Jr. officiating. Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery of Marion.

Sylvia Smith
Sylvia Pearl "Sue Pearl" Smith, 57, died on Friday, Dec. 26, 2008 at Fort Pierce, Fla. Her parents were the late Charlie and Pearl Gerald Owens of Mullins. She was educated in South Carolina public schools and also attended Friendship College at Rock Hill. She joined Bethlehem Baptist Church at Marion, where a funeral was directed by Jackson & McGill on Jan. 5, 2009.
Interment was at Jackson & Daughters Cemetery. She is survived by her husband Howard Smith of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; brothers Bobby Owens of Ft. Pierce, Fla.; and Wilbert Owens of Delray Beach, Fla.
