FLOYD BYRD
SOCIETY HILL - Floyd Byrd, 87, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at his residence. Funeral arrangements will be announced by Young & Young Funeral Home of Hartsville. The family will receive friends at 1224 Meadow Lark Lane in the Society Hill community.

ROBERT LEE
ATKINSON
Funeral services for Robert Lee Atkinson, 86, who died Dec. 23, 2008, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, at Pine Ridge Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Cash and the Rev. Billy Campbell officiating. Burial followed on Monday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m. in Florence National Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home.
Mr. Atkinson was born in Darlington County, a son of the late William Bert and Maude Tyner Atkinson. He was retired from Sonoco Products Co. after 37 years of service, a member of the Old Timers Club and Pine Ridge Baptist Church. After formal retirement he worked at Clanton’s Auto Sales as a security guard and also helped his wife in the family business at Atkinson’s Garden Center. He was a Veteran of World War II having served in the 80th AA Battalion of the 82nd Airborne Division of which he was a charter member. His tour of duty included North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He rode a glider into the fields of Normandy on D-Day, June 6, 1944, and helped liberate the first town in France, St. Mere Eglise. His unit fought for 87 days without relief. He glided into the plowed fields of Holland in operation Market Garden and fought for the Nimegan Bridge. He fought back Piper’s advance in the Battle of the Bulge amid blizzard conditions. His unit crossed the Rhine to meet the Russians, and he served six months after the war ended in security forces in Berlin. His
honors and medals include: Sicilian, Naples-Foggia, Normandy, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe campaigns, EAMET Campaign Ribbon with six Bronze Service Stars and one Bronze Arrowhead (for service on D-Day) Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Belgian Fourragere, Militaire Willems Order, Sharpshooter Badge, Glider Wings and Badge. He also earned a Medal for Valor in Operation Market Garden.
Surviving are his wife Eunice Hatfield Atkinson of Hartsville; sons, Reginald Lee (Linda) Atkinson, Ira Bert (Donna) Atkinson; daughters, Phyllis A. (Mark) Palmieri, Susan A. (Michael) Hewell, all of Hartsville; sister, Annie Cassidy of Hartsville; brother, Johnny Atkinson of Hartsville; six grandchildren, Brian Lee (Patricia) Atkinson, Michael Todd (Angie) Brown, Andrea (Joshua) Rockefellow, Eden M. Hewell, Zoey S.
Hewell, Leonardo G. Palmieri; seven great-grandchildren.

VANCE WHITE
Graveside services for Vance Kaywood White, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 2, 2009, at Magnolia Cemetery. The Rev. Doyle Jones will officiate, and Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mr. White died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008. Born in Latta, he was a son of the late Alfred Burchill and Maggie Jane McElveen White. He served as a B-24 tail gunner in the 799th Bomb Squadron during World War II. He flew more than 30 missions over France and received the EAME Theatre Service Medal with seven Bronze Stars and the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster.
Surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Henry C. “Bill” and Joyce White of Timmonsville; brother-in-law, William DeTemple, Colonel USAF (retired) of Litchfield; several nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his two sisters, Mary White DeTemple and Sara White Fant.

JEANNE BYERLY
WILHELM
Funeral services for Jeanne Byerly Wilhelm, 87, were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2008, at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Fr. Michael Malone officiating. Burial followed in Magnolia Cemetery. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home served the family. Mrs. Wilhelm, widow of J. G. Wilhelm Jr., died Sunday, Dec. 28. Born in Darlington County, she was a daughter of the late Dr. William Luther Byerly Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Jackson Byerly. Mrs. Wilhelm lived her entire life in Hartsville. She attended the public schools in Hartsville and was graduated from Hannah More Academy in Maryland in 1938. She graduated from Coker College and received her master’s degree from Winthrop College. She taught in the business department at Coker College for 35 years. She was a member of St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, a former member of the Pilot Club, and Spring Beauty Club.
Surviving are her sons and daughter-in-law, John Guy Wilhelm III of Hartsville, William B. (Budgy) and Nancy Wilhelm of Hartsville; daughters and son-in-law, Vicki Wilhelm and Jim Murray of Surfside Beach, Mary Wilhelm Jordan of Hartsville; sisters-in-law, Geraldine Wilhelm Evans, Vivian Byerly; grandchildren, Bo Wilhelm, Elizabeth Wilhelm Parsons, Mark Jordan, Jay Goodman, Jamie Goodman; great-grandchildren, Byerly Wilhelm, Julian Wilhelm; several nieces and nephews; She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. Billy Byerly, Jack Byerly and sister, Betty Byerly Greene.

VIRGINIA TURNER
LAMAR - Virginia Morrell Turner, 88, was born July 4, 1920, and passed away peacefully at the McLeod Hospice House on Dec. 26, 2008. She was born in Lamar, daughter of the late Charlie and Janie Sellers Morrell, where she lived for many years. She was loved by many and will be missed dearly. When her health allowed, she enjoyed driving around the community and checking on people. She also enjoyed hunting with her late husband, Ned Turner. Virginia was a member of Newman Swamp United Methodist Church. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gene Odom and Cephas (Cora) Odom, a daughter, Mildred Odom, siblings, Vivian Lloyd, Gertie Parnell, Carroll Morrell, Charles Morrell, Viola Wilkes, Sidney Morrell, Carl Morrell and Mary Morrell.
Mrs. Turner was the mother of six children, James and Annette Odom of Lamar, Carolyn and Bubba Jessen of Walterboro, Nettie and Dick Howle of Darlington; a step-son, Tom and Carrie Odom of Society Hill; a daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen Odom; 17 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Sammie Plummer of Oates, Carrie Sue Carter, Lula Jane Jeffords, both of Lamar; a brother, Ronnie Morrell of Oates; a very special sister-in-law, Jackie Windham; and one special dog, Peanut.
Funeral services were held in the chapel of Belk Funeral Home in Lamar at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 29, with burial following in Windhamtown Cemetery. The family is receiving friends at the home of James and Annette, 1705 Andrews Mill Rd, Lamar SC 29069.

WILLA BOZE
BARRETT
Funeral services for Willa Boze Barrett, 89, of Hartsville will be held at 2 p.m. today, Jan. 2, 2009, at the First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. The Rev. Ryan Goodroe will officiate and the family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall. Funeral services will also be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2008 at the Community Presbyterian Church in Pinehurst, N.C. Mrs. Barrett died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008.

ASHTON BYRD
Graveside services for Ashton Kirkpatric Byrd, 88, who died Dec. 25,
2008, were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 28,
in Magnolia Cemetery directed by Norton Funeral Home with the Rev. Ryan Goodroe officiating.
Mr. Byrd was born in Hartsville, a son of the late Robert Dority and Mary Birdie Byrd. He was retired from the City of Hartsville after 42 years of service in the Water Department, was a member of First Baptist Church, graduated
from Antioch School and was a Veteran of World War II.
Surviving are one niece, Kathy Brewer of Sanford, N.C.; four nephews, Lee Stogner of Taylors, Ernest Abernethy of Charlotte, N.C., John Abernethy of Charlotte, N.C., and David Abernethy of Buford, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife Frances Thompson Byrd.
