MYRTLE BEACH -- Officials with the Coastal South Carolina Chapter of the American Red Cross say its Heroes for the ARC Campaign event raised close to $12,000 on Thursday.

The event was held at Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville in Myrtle Beach.

"This amount combined with money already donated by returning “heroes” and pledges made by local businesses puts the Chapter’s kick off efforts at $49,000 towards their $125,000 goal," said Red Cross CEO Angela Nicholas.

According to Nicholas, the Coastal South Carolina Chapter runs its primary fundraising campaign during the month of March, which is recognized as Red Cross Month across the nation. To be a “hero, individuals or businesses pledge to donate or raise at least $1,000.

As part of this year’s program, 21 restaurants have pledged to participate to raise $1,000 each.
