A Timmonsville man was indicted by a federal grand jury after authorities said he took more than $360,000 in government funds, U.S. Attorney Walter Wilkins said in a press release issued Wednesday.

Arthur Rhett Garner III, 62, was charged in a three-count indictment with the theft of $360,000 in government funds and filing false statements to obtain federal employee’s compensation.

Authorities allege that Garner began to file regularly for federal compensation after he claimed to be injured on the job as a postal worker in 1998 and falsely stated that he had no other income.

The maximum penalty for this crime is a $250,000 fine and 10 years in prison.

The case is being investigated by the U.S. Postal Service. Assistant U.S. Attorney Bill Day II of the Florence office is prosecuting the case.
