Marion School District One held their “Players of Excellence" awards to celebrate those who are making a difference in their communities.
The keynote speaker was Marion native and former NFL linebacker Louis Cooper.
The four Marion County natives honored Wednesday were: Taft Watson of Terrell's Bay, Lynn Ceasar and Tim Perkins, both of Marion and Addie Cain of Rains.
Third graders also performed in the choir and sang songs representing Black history.
There was also a display of a Kwanzaa table and symbols, representative of Black history.
Fourth grade teacher, Ashley Hughes, sang the “Negro National Anthem” and a short play was presented titled, “We Thank You” as a salute to African Americans that have made a difference for the young people of America.
The program was held in the school’s gymnasium.
