The 2009-10 school calendar has been approved by the Florence School District 4 Board of Trustees.
Superintendent Dr. Bertha McCants presented a draft of the district’s school calendar, which included an additional 10 working days for teachers to be used for professional development or conferences.
Students attending Florence 4 schools will begin the new school year Aug. 17, while teachers’ first day will be Aug. 3.
School registration will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Aug. 3 and from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 4.
Also during Tuesday’s meeting, McCants discussed an exit report from an External Review Team from the state Department of Education.
Districts with an At-Risk (formerly Unsatisfactory) Absolute rating on its School Report Cards participate in the ERT process, which is designed to help districts improve student achievement.
The superintendent, principal and other school leadership, as well as ERT members, determine goals and evidence-based strategies or practices that will become the Focused School Renewal Plan (FSRP), according to the state department’s Web site, http://ed.sc.gov.
The ERT visits the district several times throughout the school year.
The exit report showed that Florence 4 met all standards in the area of leadership and governance, and curriculum and instruction and professional development for the 2008-09 school year.
Some of the standards included the district establishing academic assistance initiatives for all grade levels.
The ERT exit report was for the board to review.
The board later approved a discipline survey to be given to students, faculty and parents on their views about the district’s discipline policies, rules and practices.
