A Hartsville man has been arrested in connection with a burglary and sexual assault that happened Sunday afternoon near Hartsville, according to a press release from the Darlington County Sheriff’s Office.
James Bernard Addison, 39, of Gallowaytown Road in Hartsville was arrested after investigators say he broke into a woman’s house and waited until she returned before he sexually assaulted the victim, according to the release. The suspect knew the victim and was familiar with her residence.
After the assault, the suspect stole the victim’s car and fled the scene. She called 911 to report the crime and deputies, while en route to her residence, spotted the suspect in the victim’s car, stopped the vehicle and arrested him without incident.
“It was the quick thinking of the deputies responding that help catch (the suspect) so fast,” Sheriff Wayne Byrd said in the press release. “This is a truly scary situation for the victim and I hope that she can rest easier knowing that (he) is behind bars.”
Addison is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree burglary, grand larceny and driving under suspension and remains in custody at the Darlington County Detention Center awaiting bond hearings.
