Marion County Obituaries: to be published on Feb. 25

Ernest E. Coward
Mullins - Ernest Edward Coward, 86, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 in the Marion Nursing Center after an illness. Born on Dec. 28, 1922 in Florence County, Mr. Coward was a son of the late Drayton Ellie Coward and the late Mamie Gaymon Coward. He was a retired painter and a U.S. Army veteran, having served in World War II as a sergeant.
Surviving Mr. Coward are five sisters, Velma Thompson of Dunwoody, Ga., Ethel Jones of Mullins, Mary Ellen Coker of North Charleston, Eloise Howard of Florence and Juanita Sanderlin of Mullins; and several neices and nephews. Mr. Coward was predeceased by a sister, Irene Evans; and two brothers, Thomas Coward and J.H. Coward.
Services will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21 in the chapel of Cox-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Darrell Floyd officiating. Burial will follow in the Red Hill Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Visitation will be Saturday from 2-3 p.m., one hour before the service, at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to Ascension Hospice, P.O. Box 1367, Irmo, 29063. The family would like to express a special thank you to Dr. John Odom, the staff of Marion Nursing Center and to Ascension Hospice for all their loving care.

Elton Pate Crawford
Marion - Elton Pate Crawford, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009 at McLeod Hospice House after an extended illness.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in Richardson Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Crawford Cemetery.
Mr. Crawford was born in Dillon County, a son of the late James Calvin and Peloney Walker Crawford. He is also predeceased by his wife, Janie Hayes Crawford.
Mr. Crawford was a veteran of the U.S. Army-Air Force, serving during World War II. He worked for the U.S. Navy as an auto mechanic in civil service and was a member of Pee Dee Southern Methodist Church.
Surviving are his daughters, Janice Halstead of Gallatin, Tenn., Helen Crawford of Fredericksburg, Va., Martha Lacy of Gallatin, Tenn., Janie Kehler of Brunswick, Ga.; a sister, Alma Hayes; and grandsons, Eric Lindeman and Stanley Lacy.
Memorials may be made to the American Brittney Spaniel Rescue C/O Andrea Bock, 2118 Brigadier Blvd. Odenton, Md., 21113.

Mary Ellen Gordon
Marion - Mary Ellen Gordon, 56, died Monday, Feb. 9, 2009 in Georgtown Memorial Hospital after an illness.
A funeral was on Feb. 11, in Little Bethel Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery, directed by Richardson Funeral.
Mrs. Gordon was born in Mullins, a daughter of James Williamson of Marion and Ruby Rogers Williamson of Mullins. She was a member of Little Bethel Baptist Church and worked at Blumenthal Mills for over 20 years.
Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Ronald Gordon; son, Carl “Wayne” Hardee and his wife, Cassidy, of Georgetown; daughter, Debbie Hardee Simmons and her husband, Ralph, of Marion; brothers, Eddie Williamson and Melton Williamson, both of Mullins; sisters, Ruby Jane Hardee of Marion, Barbara Small of Mullins, Alice Bailey of Jesup, Ga., and Linda Searbourough of Monks Corner; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 500 Taylor Street, Suite 101, Columbia, 29201-3000.

Mary S. Branton
Marion - Mary S. Branton, 80, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 in Marion Nursing Center after an illness.
She was born on Jan. 7, 1929 in Horry County, a daughter of the late Hope and Dessie Turner. Mrs. Branton was retired from AVM and was a graduate of Floyds High School. Mrs. Branton was a member of Marion Church of God.
She was predeceased by her first husband, Pearley Shelley, and her second husband, Lendward Branton.
Surviving Mrs. Branton are four sons, Larry Shelley of Dillon, Harry Shelley and his wife Lila-Jo of Thomasville, N.C., Jimmy Shelley and his wife Gloria of Marion and Ricky Shelley and his wife Dianne of Dillon; two daughters, Debbie Smith of Columbia and Renee Rittenberry and her husband Jan of Gresham; 15 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Eunice Blanton, Shirley Powell and Rachel Turner; and a brother, Otis Turner.
Services were on Sunday, Feb. 15 in the Chapel of Smith-Collins Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alvin Shifflett officiating. Burial followed in Devotion Gardens Cemetery.

Michael G. Sutton
Mullins - Michael G. Sutton, 77, husband of Janice Caulder Sutton, died Friday, Feb. 13, 2009 in McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence after an illness.
Born on Sept. 11, 1931 in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of the late Edward D. and Tillie Benes Sutton. Mr. Sutton retired from the U.S. Navy, where he served in the Medical Service Corps as a hospital Corpsman. He served during the Korean War.
Mr. Sutton also worked with Lambert Security Company as a security guard and was a member of the VFW, the American Legion and the Elks Club. He was a graduate of Francis Marion University, where he received a Bachelors Degree of General Studies. Mr. Sutton attended McMillan Memorial Baptist Church.
Surviving Mr. Sutton, in addition to his wife, are three step-children, Angela Coleman and her husband Rodney of Marion, Michael Windham and his wife Sharon of Marion and Daniel Windham of Marion; five children from a previous marriage; several grandchildren; and a sister, of Texas.
Graveside services, with military honors, were at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 17 in the Florence National Cemetery, with the Rev. Frank Campbell officiating. The services were directed be Smith-Collins Funeral Home of Marion.

Robert B. Morris Sr.
Green Sea - Robert Boyd Morris Sr., 71, formerly of Turbeville, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009. Born on Aug. 21, 1937 in Lynchburg, he was a son of the late McCutcheon and Colzie Dickerson Morris. Mr. Morris was a retired truck driver and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving Mr. Morris are his children, Robert Boyd Morris Jr. and his wife Patricia of Socastee, Teresa Scott and her husband Thurmond of Nichols, Kimberly Hudson and her former husband Timmy of Nichols, and Cynthia Ratley and her former husband R.C. of Marion; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Coleen Watson of Camden and Imajean Langston of Lynchburg; and two special friends, Lennie Matthews and Irene Miller.
Mr. Morris was predeceased by two grandchildren, Leslie Hudson and Irene Morris; his twin brother, William Morris; and two other brothers, Bethea Morris and Carroll Morris.
Graveside services are at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19 in the Turbeville Southern Methodist Church Cemetery in Turbeville. The services will be directed by Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins. Visitation is Wednesday evening from 7-9 p.m. in Cox-Collins Funeral Home of Mullins.
