Florence-Darlington Technical College is the only technical college in South Carolina among the top five nursing programs in the state to have a high pass rate on the National Council Licensure Examination, or NCLEX.
The NCLEX is a rigorous exam that measures the competencies needed to perform safely and effectively as a newly licensed, entry-level nurse, according to the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
Florence-Darlington Technical College, which had a pass rate of 92 percent, is ranked along with the Medical University of South Carolina and Bob Jones, Charleston Southern and Lander universities
Seventy-seven registered nursing graduates of the college’s associate degree nursing program took the NCLEX (pronounced N-Clex) between Jan. 1, 2008, and Dec. 31.
The number of students in the state that took the NCLEX between that time was 1,911.
Florence-Darlington Tech’s pass rate was higher than the state and national rates, which were 87.3 percent and 86.7 percent, respectively.
Dr. Sharon Davis, associate vice president of FDTC’s Health Science campus, said she wasn’t surprised about the college’s ranking. She said the ranking was “a wonderful kudo to the faculty, as well as the graduates.”
“I’m not surprised because all of the health programs here at FDTC have super faculty and they work very hard on their program and with the students,” Davis said. “When you have a good program and you have a good faculty who have tremendous work ethics, and you have students who are focused and goal-oriented, you put those two things together, and you have an excellent outcome.”
Sharon Stafford, associate dean of nursing, said the nursing program offers students assistance with taking the national exam with one-on-one tutoring, provides a nurse mentor for the students and offers practice tests to help students prepare for the NCLEX.
Stafford said she was delighted to hear about the NCLEX pass rate, which she says is the highest score the college has had since 2000.
“I think it’s wonderful,” Stafford said. “It took a lot of hard work to get us to this point.
“The nursing school is putting out good graduates that can pass the NCLEX and get out into the work force and supply the community needs of nursing (professionals),” she said.
