Larus Lilley, owner of the Subway of Mullins, was honored by the Greater Mullins Chamber of Commerce as its 2008 Business of the Year and the 2008 Community Service Award was given to DuPree Atkinson of Atkinson Farms, Mullins.
Lilley was born in New Jersey, spent his childhood in Chicago and graduated from high school in Cheshire, Conn., and graduated from Clemson In 1982, his biography said. In 1992 he moved to Marion County where he has owned and operated Subways in the area for 16 years. He lives in Carolina Forest at Myrtle Beach with his wife Sheri.
The recipient of the Mullins Chamber of Commerce 2008 Community Service Award, Atkinson is a native of Mullins and a Citadel graduate. After college he returned to Mullins in 1977, formed a partnership in farming with his father, Billy Atkinson, and continues to specialize in strawberries, vegetables, peanuts, corn, grains, cattle, hay and tobacco. Atkinson has served on numerous agricultural and civic boards at the local and state levels, is a Boy Scout leader, an active member of Macedonia United Methodist Church and has served on the Pee Dee Academy Board. He is married to Celia Psillos Atkinson.
The City of Mullins named firefighter Robert Woodberry as it Employee of the Year. Mayor Pam Lee and Fire Chief Robert Stetson gave the award, saying that Woodberry was a full time firefighter for the town for 22 years and has served as part time firefighter since retiring in 2008.
Outgoing board members and incoming board members were honored at the annual banquet and the gavel of presidency was passed from John Hughes to Debbie Waltz.
Rodney Berry, Marion County’s economic development director, said several projects are still being looked at as possibilities for development in the county.
Marion School District 2 Superintendent Nathaniel Miller said the district is facing tough economic times, like all other entities, and facing challenges, but that the school has gotten its best improvement ratings from the state and several junior scholars were named this year. A dire and urgent issue to address in his district, Miller said, is teen pregnancy. At this time, Mullins has about 17 pregnant students in its schools. Also, he said, the district is contending with high school students who are parents to pre-schoolers.
Miller said the community has to look at how to better address the issue.
Cecil Chandler, guest speaker at the annual meeting entertained those present with stories from his 30-plus years a broadcast journalist. First as a reporter in the Darlington community, then as a council member, then as a television show host on WBTW TV13 and on to his move to the beach, Chandler said he has always loved getting up to go to work. He said everyone should strive to do what they enjoy.

WBTW TV 13’s Cecil Chandler joked with members of the Greater Mullins Chamber of Commerce when he appeared as the guest speaker at the group’s recent annual awards banquet.
