Heart disease kills more than seven million people worldwide each year. Created to raise awareness of the severity and prevention of hearth disease, National Cardiac Rehabilitation Week is observed each year in February.
Cardiac rehabilitation is a program designed to help heart patients recover quickly from a heart attack, angioplasty, stenting, open heart surgery, stable angina or heart transplant by improving overall physical and mental functioning. The goal is to treat the existing condition and reduce the risk of developing another cardiac problem.
The theme of this year’s celebration is “The Pulse of Life”, reflecting the dedication of cardiac rehabilitation professionals to their patients and to their goal of reducing the devastating effects of heart disease. Over one quarter of all deaths in the US are caused by heart disease, making it the leading cause of death in the United States. Fortunately, there are many things you can do to keep your heart healthy including:
• Know your blood pressure and keep it under control
• Exercise regularly
• Don’t smoke
• Get tested for diabetes and if you have it, keep it under control
• Know your cholesterol level and keep it under control
• Eat a lot of fruits and vegetables
• Maintain a healthy weight
