Filing to run in the April city elections in Marion ended at noon Thursday. Citizens of Marion will be choosing a mayor and two council members on April 14.
This will be Mayor Bobby Gerald’s seventh bid for office, having served for 24 years. Political newcomer Nancy Harrelson is challenging him. Harrelson, a Republican, lost to incumbent U.S. Rep. James Clyburn in this past November’s election. Gerald is a Democrat.
Marion City Council is made up of seven elected members, six council members and a mayor. Council members elect a mayor pro-tem from the elected council. Each member serves a four-year term.
Incumbent Ronald K. Davis will face Betsy B. Atkinson for City Council Seat 3, incumbent Michael E. Baker will face Jerome Hickey Bockey Reed for City Council Seat 6 and incumbent Poiette McGill-Bromell, City Council Seat 5, goes into the election unopposed.
Anyone interested in voting in the upcoming election will need to be registered by Saturday, March 14, Teresa Moody, director of the Marion County Voters Registration and Election Commission said.
Polling places during the election will be open from 7 a.m.- 7 p.m. and are as follows: Marion 1, in the Marion Fire Department; Marion 2, in the Opera House; Marion North, in the Marion Intermediate School; and Marion South, in the Eloise Grice Recreation Center. Marion City Council meets the second Tuesday of each month in Marion City Hall.
