Saving money these days is tough, especially during the holiday season. That's why some local shoppers are finding creative ways for gift giving by turning to second-hand stores.

Some of those thrifty holiday gift shoppers said they would rather turn down department and retail store prices and instead look for gifts that won't leave them without any money at all.

Terin Potter said she's been a thrift store shopper for years, so when she was on a hunt to get the most for her money this Christmas season, she said there's no better way to do all of her gift shopping than the "thrifty way."

"All of your family that you buy for, you can kind of cut back on your close family because you know you can buy them used things and they'll appreciate it just because you know they need it,” Potter said.

Diana Page said she snapped up first-rate gifts at second-hand prices while shopping at the Goodwill Store in Surfside Beach.

"I found brand new shoes that have never been worn before," she said. "Money is tight, so I have to watch what I spend."

While some shoppers chose to look for bargain prices at commercial retailers, employees at Goodwill said it doesn't beat the deep discounts shoppers could find on used and new DVDs, bicycles and even name-brand handbags at ther discount retail shop.

“People snatch it up as soon as it comes out on the floor,” store manger Melissa Farley said of the store's newest items. "Like on Saturday, we had probably eight bicycles out here on the floor, just kids bikes that people had donated, and those are now gone"

"I'd rather come and spend $30 here and get three or four gifts then going and getting one gift somewhere else for the same amount of price," Potter said.

Farley said shoppers are not only getting their holiday gifts for less, but their money also is helping the organization -- which in turn helps the community. She said 90 cents of every dollar spent at the store goes toward Goodwill's mission of giving jobs to the disabled.
