Deputies find Lamar man's body in well, no foul play suspected

A man whose body was discovered in a small well in Lamar is not believed to have been the victim of foul play, according to a Darlington County Sheriff’s Office press release.

The Darlington County Coroner’s Office identified the man as Samuel Boston, 63, of 4807 Oates Highway in Lamar.

Deputies were called to the site on Oates Highway just after noon Monday by a family member who was looking for a missing relative no one had seen since Saturday.

When they arrived, they found Boston under about two feet of water in a small homemade spillway or sump, a reservoir for liquid. The basement of Boston's home was flooded and it appeared he was trying to pump some of the water out of the basement though the sump, which about 3 feet wide and less than 4 feet deep in the front yard.

“There does not seem to be any evidence of foul play at this time. We will know more after an autopsy is preformed,” Sheriff Wayne Byrd said in the release.

Mr. Boston was pronounced dead at the scene by Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee. The death has been ruled an accident by the Coroner.
