Florence police are investigating a suspicious incident where a man was pulled from the back seat of a burning vehicle in the front parking lot of the Morning News.

It happened about 6:30 p.m. Friday. A woman leaving Drs. Bruce & Lee Foundation Library saw the Jeep Cherokee on fire and called E-911.

Moments later, firefighters from Florence Station 1, just a few hundred feet away from the building, arrived on the scene.

After the flames were extinguished, a firefighter noticed someone was in the vehicle and called EMS.

A shirtless man was pulled from the back seat of the sport-utility vehicle several minutes later and put into an ambulance. It is unclear whether he was the driver or the owner of the SUV, or a passenger.

A witness said she heard the SUV outside the building about 6:15 p.m. and noticed it was making a loud sound she likened to that of a leaf blower.

Florence firefighters and police are investigating the cause of the fire.
