High school level home-schooled students gather at ScienceSouth as part of the Homeschool Science Academy on the last Friday of every month. The students participate in both biology and chemistry curricula that follow the lessons taught in the students’ home the rest of the month. “This gives them the access to equipment they may not other wise have,” said Brock Page, outreach coordinator for ScienceSouth. “We provide them with equipment to do the experiments, a little bit of guidance to do their experiments, and a little bit of content.”
The classes also offer the students a chance to socialize and work with other home-schooled high school students in a classroom environment. Maggie Doyle, 14, of Darlington said this is one of the best parts of the program. A member of the Hartsville Home School Educators, she has been home schooled since she was 5. “The home school program is great because I get to meet other home schoolers in my area,” she said. “I have met several new people out side my home school group. It’s great for us because as home schoolers, we don’t get a lab experience, and here we get to get together interact and learn.”
ScienceSouth also offers the Homeschool Science Academy for students in grades K-8 on the first and third Friday of each month from 9 to 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.sciencesouth.org or call (843) 679-5353 ext. 313
