Karen Parker laughs out loud as she and fellow parishioner Pat Bucher serve a hot Christmas dinner of stew, rice, bread and cake as St. Anne's Catholic Church celebrated their annual Christmas Dinner with parishioners and recipients of their weekly food outreach program on Wednesday December 16, 2009.
Every Wednesday for more than five years, parishioners from St. Anne's Catholic Church in Florence have passed out bags of groceries to about 135 needy families in Florence and Pamplico. Today in Florence, parishioners hosted the St. Anne's Annual Christmas Dinner. The dinner of hot stew, rice, bread and cake welcomed community members to a celebration many would not have had otherwise.
"It means so much.. (to the community), we get so many calls. We could not do what we do without the parishioners," said Juanita Gerald, the church's food outreach program director. "I feel that if the church was not doing what we are doing then a lot of people would be left outside." The church, which runs its weekly program by purchasing food from Harvest Hope and accepting parishioner's donations, is in need of blankets, hats, coats and other cold weather clothing to distribute to people in the neighborhood.
