LUMBERTON, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina has fined a poultry processing plant where an employee died in June more than $70,000 for health and safety violations.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Wednesday the state Department of Labor found 22 violations - 20 of them considered serious.

Citations of the Mountaire Farms plant in Lumber Bridge include inadequate training of mechanics and emergency response employees.

The civil penalties issued Tuesday total $73,325.

Maintenance worker Clifton Swain of Fayetteville was killed when a high-pressure refrigerant line ruptured June 20.

Four others were injured. The 48-year-old Air Force retiree had worked there since 2001.

In a statement, the company said it cooperated with the investigation and will work closely with authorities.
