Grinch hits Myrtle Beach charity toy drive

Grinch hits Myrtle Beach charity toy drive

This storage unit once held more than $1,000 worth of donated toys, destined for Horry County disadvantaged families. Instead, someone stole the toys.

When ABATE members pulled open the door on the motorcycle group's storage shed in Myrtle Beach on Sunday, they realized more than $1,000 worth of donated toys, bikes, and dolls were gone.
Stolen--sometime between September and now.

"My heart fell," said ABATE Coordinator Rebecca Rowan.

Now, the group, which is holding a toy run on Saturday--originally slated to rase money and toys for next Christmas--has to scramble to meet the needs of families it wants to help this Christmas.

"We're out to try to fill as much as we can," said Rowan on Tuesday morning. "Hopefully, we're going to get a lot of donations in, and we'll still be able to take care of those children, but not as well as we have in the past," she said.

ABATE chooses Horry County elementary schools to help each year, and the indivdual schools pick out families that need assistance. ABATE then provides gifts for all children in those families.

Rowan said this theft will not stop the group from doing its best to make sure all families can enjoy a merry Christmas.

"That's what it's about," she said.

If you would like to help, of if you want more information about this weekend's motorcycle toy run, call Rowan at (843) 455-2935.
