Lakewood Elementary School in Myrtle Beach opened its doors to celebrate its 50th anniversary.

Sheron Pope had no trouble finding an old photo of her from a yearbook showing the early days of Lakewood Elementary School.

She was one the first students to walk through the hallways of the “L-shaped building,” 50 years ago.

“I just remember this being new and very excited. I think it was surrounded by dirt roads at the time because if it ever rained we had to walk to the airbase to get on the bus, I can remember doing that,” said Pope.

Pope says she cherishes her time at Lakewood. She loved going to the school so much as a student, she became a teacher there in the 1970's.

She says the school has changed a lot in 50 years.

“When I drove up I could not believe how huge the school is. I can remember the old mimeograph machines that had the purple ink that you would get all over you, which i used when i started teaching too, so they didn't progress from then. I can remember the chalkboards with the little holders that held the five pieces of chalk that you drew the lines you know so you could do your handwriting and so forth,” said Pope.

As she watched students who now go to the school perform songs in Lakewood’s auditorium as part of the 50th anniversary celebration, Pope says one thing hasn't changed about the school.

“I think it's just a really strong family unit here and it has been. Memories of my childhood and my early years here teaching, it's always been a close-knit community,” said Pope.
