Pam and Henry Chapman started Chapman’s Christmas Tree Farm, located about halfway between Society Hill and Cheraw, more than 18 years ago. Henry decided to start the farm just before he retired so he would have something to do.
“I just enjoy getting out every morning and having a place to come out to,” he said.
Many people in the area and from out of state enjoy coming out to the tree farm, too. The Chapmans said for several years, a family from Florida would stop by, pick out their tree on the way to North Carolina for Thanksgiving, then on the way back put it on top of the car and drive all the way back to Florida with the tree strapped to the top of the car.
On Friday, Patricia and Edward Tobias from Darlington stopped in at the tree farm to get their tree on a chilly afternoon.
“It’s a tradition we’ve been doing for the past four years, and we really like the trees here,” said Patricia.
Also on Friday, Rachel and Larry Jones made their annual trek from Wingate, N.C., to get their tree.
Pam Chapman said it makes her feel really good that people come back each year, and she enjoys talking to them and seeing the children grow up over the years.
“That’s the part I really enjoy is getting to know the families,” she said.
Chapman’s Christmas Tree Farm opens after Thanksgiving, Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. until Christmas.
The farm has three types of trees to pick from: leyland cypress, cedar and a few white pine trees. Each tree costs $35 no matter what the size.
