November retail sales appear to be better than some business leaders originally expected across the country.
The Commerce Department said today retail sales rose 1.3% in November.
It's more than double the increase analysts expected.
Illya Gonzalez of Myrtle Beach says she has spent more money on holiday shopping this year compared to last. She's not alone. Studies show consumer confidence is up.
“Probably because we're hoping that things will be better this year, 2010. We held up last year and this year you're like, ok, at least I want to enjoy the season a little bit more than I did last Christmas,” said Gonzalez.
People spending more has helped stores and shopping complexes like the Market Common.
Market Common leaders say retail sales were up this November compared to the same month last year, thanks in large part to a better Black Friday turnout.
“That was a great kick-off to the holidays and then since then, during the week and the weekends we've been real busy as well. We don't have the numbers in yet but I’m sure that it's an increase over last year,” said Hatton Gravely.
The Commerce Department is reporting a small gain in business inventories in October, which breaks a 13-month streak of declines.
