So often, we hear about the problems with today’s schools and students.
There are stories of falling test scores, budget cuts, teacher shortages, etc. I think that we should take some time to see the positives that exist within our schools.
Saturday, I was able to help out with a workshop held by Wilson High School’s Mock Trial team.
The time and effort put forth by students, FSD1 staff, and community members was inspiring.
On a busy December weekend, approximately 20 high school students chose to spend eight hours at school learning how to improve their performance on their Mock Trial team.
They arrived early on Saturday morning with enthusiastic attitudes. They remained attentive, respectful and insightful students during the entire day. Ms. Debra Gammons, a professor from Charleston School of Law, came to Wilson High School to present the workshop along with 13 local attorneys (none of whom have children on the team).
Not one of these professionals were paid for their efforts, but they graciously volunteered their time and expertise to help a group of high school students improve themselves.
I wish that I could single out each local attorney who provided instruction, but there were simply too many to list here.
To every attorney, parent, WHS staff member and student who participated, to Ms. Karen Medley (Wilson High School teacher and coordinator of the WHS Mock Trial Team), and to Ms. Debra Gammons, professor at Charleston School of Law, a huge thank you for your efforts.
I know that there will always be challenges within our schools, but we can look to positive examples, like this one and so many others, to help us to continue to believe in the promise of our schools and our community.
