LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Thanks to community for success of holiday diabetes event

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I would like to sincerely thank the Lake City News & Post for the excellent coverage that the paper gave Pee Dee Diabetic Consultants and our recent Holiday Event. This is the first time in the many, many years of doing this event that I have had such good coverage.

A special thanks to Brad McClam for the excellent coverage and staying to the end of my 1 1/2 hour program. This year I had a wonderful crowd of more than 80 patients whom I have taught over the years. It was thrilling to have such a good crowd and to have so many patients who have benefited from my program.

Of the 80 people in attendance, I had 22 patients who had reports from their doctors verifying that they had blood sugars in a normal range with an A1C (average of blood sugars over the past three months) of six or under.

This was the first year that I had an award for the patient that had the best A1C, and the award went to Clyde Bess. He received a $300 gift certificate from Piggly Wiggly. The award is called the Julian “Bubba” Dixon A1C award in memory of my father, who died from complications due to diabetes.

I would also like to thank the people in the Lake City community who helped make this event possible: Piggly Wiggly and Price Wise Pharmacy, who support my work and give me the space to have these events; Lake City Junior Women’s Club, who gave me a monetary gift to help provide holiday desserts to all the patients who came to the event; Wallace Chiropractic Center, who gave me coupons for free massages; Merck Pharmaceuticals, who provided the education for the event; the patients of Pee Dee Diabetic Consultants who attended the event; the numerous physicians in Lake City and the surrounding area who have referred patients to me; and of course my family, who supports me and my work and who gave the money for the A1C award.

Teaching the diabetic community is really my passion in life, and to see the support from the Lake City community was so rewarding. Lake City is truly a great place to live and work, and I hope will be able to touch many more people in the community and help them get this disease under better control.

I would encourage anyone who is interested in learning more about this disease state to get in touch with me at Price Wise Pharmacy. I hope that each year this event will get bigger and bigger and that more and more patients will become an A1C champion.
