»  Comments | Post a Comment

COLUMBIA --- United States Attorney W. Walter Wilkins stated Wednesday that Jesse R. Lance, 60, of Georgetown, was charged Tuesday in a 29-count Indictment with aiding in the preparation of false tax returns, a violation of Title 26, United States Code, Section 7206(2). The indictment alleges that the returns falsely claimed motor fuel tax credits that the taxpayers were not entitled to claim.

Wilkins stated the maximum penalty Lance could receive is a fine of $250,000 and imprisonment of three years on each count.

Wilkins stated that the case was investigated by agents of the Internal Revenue Service, and that he has assigned the case to Assistant United States Attorney Dean H. Secor of the Charleston Office for prosecution.

The United States Attorney stated that all charges in this Indictment are merely accusations and that all defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
