JOHNSONVILLE— Police arrested Marquito Mack Turner, 25, of 311 Apartment 5A Liberty Street, Johnsonville after she attempted to leave Fred’s Department Store without paying for a cordless phone, which she had hidden in her purse.
According to Chief Douglas, because of Turner’s, who had two small children with her, cooperation with law enforcement, they were attempting to assist her by getting her bonded out so that she would not have to spend the night in the Florence County Detention Center at Effingham.
Police said that while officers were working out details with Turner, her husband, Joseph Lee Turner, 26, of 105 Dell Drive, Hemingway, came into the police department intoxicated, exhibiting very hostile behavior. He was escorted out of the building but continued protest for nearly 15 minutes, refusing the Chief’s request that he calm down or leave the area, police said. Turner was charged with Breach of Peace and Resisting Arrest.
While the Officers were preparing the husband and wife for transport to the Detention Center, a third person drove up to check on the pair and she was recognized as having nearly $1800.00 in unpaid fines to the Johnsonville Police Department, officers said. Millicent Graham Waterman, 29, of Quail Road, Lot 14, Hemingway was then taken into custody for Driving Under Suspension, 2nd. Offense, Giving False Information to a Police Officer and Operating With Faulty Equipment (slick tire).
The trio accumulated nearly $5000.00 in fines, which all started with the attempted shop lifting of a $30.00 cordless phone.
Chief Douglas concluded by stating that this is yet another example of how the downturn in the economy or the desire by some to commit crimes against others usually leads to a positive return on the investment for his department and thus the City.
