Bishopville man convicted of participating in counterfeit check ring

COLUMBIA -- United States Attorney W. Walter Wilkins stated Wednesday that a jury in federal district court found Joseph Henry, 27, of Bishopville, guilty of being a conspirator in a counterfeiting check ring.

Henry was indicted in January for providing counterfeit checks to two individuals and to helping them cash the checks. The checks were drawn on the account of Creech, Roddey and Watson Insurance Company of Sumter, South Carolina. The merchants who cashed the checks suffered losses of $11,000 collectively.

Henry is awaiting sentencing. The maximum possible penalty for conspiracy five years and a fine of $250,000.

Mr. Wilkins stated that the case was being investigated by United States Secret Service Agents Bradley Smith and Tracy Evans and that he case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Nathan Williams and Debbie Barbier of the Columbia office.
