Another check scam in the area, this time it's a promise of $250,000. Tom Salvatore is a realtor in North Myrtle Beach.
He said he and his wife got a letter stating they were one of only 12 people who won a quarter of a million dollars. He said then they received a hand-written letter and a check for $6800, but they would need to send nearly $3000 in taxes and fees before they deposited the check.
"Initially, being an ex-banker, that hit me,” said Tom Salvatore. “However, the check is a legitimate check. The check is drawn on Citibank and it's from Guildford Publishing, Inc. in New York [City]. I called to verify everything, I called the firm and I was put in contact with the manager and they told me that the company was hit quite a bit with these checks, the check was no good."
Since the check is legitimate and any bank would take it without question, but it would bounce. Salvotore called the FBI office in Columbia and agents saidy they're seeing a lot of the checks.
If you receive a check in the mail, call the bank and the company who sent it. It's almost guaranteed to be a scam, so don't fall for it.
