Meeting to address Florence police incident

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Florence City Councilman Ed Robinson has planned another meeting to follow up on a controversial Oct. 28 police incident involving a suspect who said he suffers from epilepsy.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Levy Park.

The incident began when Florence County EMS were called to 33-year-old Terrell Echols’ Pine Street home. Florence police responded because Echols was disorderly, according to an incident report.

The police report indicates there was a struggle between Echols and officers, and police said they did what they had to do to restrain a patient. Officers eventually used Tasers and a baton-like ASP to try to subdue him, according to the report.

Echols said he was suffering from an epileptic seizure and police used excessive force to subdue him. EMS and police both maintain Echols was injured prior to the struggle. The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the incident.

For more information about Thursday’s meeting, call Robinson at (843) 229-9571.
