A Florence man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for robbing a Florence Food Lion, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney W. Walter Wilkins.
William Roy Cox, 35, pleaded guilty in July and agreed to at least 10 years in prison.
The crime happened July 27, 2008, at the store on Second Loop Road.
Cox approached the cashier to buy a drink. He then lunged across the counter and took money from the open cash drawer.
That same day in Florence, Cox went to the Kangaroo Convenience Store on Cashua Drive and a CVS Pharmacy on Irby Street and robbed those stores the same way, as well, according to the release.
After Florence police received information about Cox’s whereabouts, he led police on a 20-mile high-speed chase that ended after he crashed his truck into a field and ran. He was arrested later with the help of the bloodhound unit and State Law Enforcement Division helicopter.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Rose Mary Parham of the Florence office prosecuted the case, which also was investigated by the FBI.
