COWARD – A 15-year-old Timmonsville girl died early Saturday morning when the SUV she was riding in ran a stop sign and collided with a second SUV about 5 miles north of Lake City.

Florence County Coroner Bubba Matthews identified the victim as Kelsey Rogers, 15. She was pronounced dead at 1:52 a.m. at a local hospital, he said.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers, the victim was a passenger in a 2000 Escalade driven by David Lee Rogers, 23, of Timmonsville, north on Union School Road.

Brouthers said the Escalade ran through a stop sign at the Anderson Bridge Road intersection and collided with a 1998 GMC Yukon driven by Matthew Smith, 24, of Pamplico.

The trooper said it was raining at the time of the crash.

The crash remains under investigation, Brouthers said.
