A house fire claimed the life of a Hartsville man Wednesday morning.

It happened about 11:15 a.m. at 410 James Ave., off Eighth Street. The victim was alone in the house when the fire happened and died at the scene.

Neighbors said the man was in his 80s and nearly blind. Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee is withholding the name of the victim pending the results of an autopsy scheduled for Thursday.

One neighbor said she checked on the man, as she does daily, at 9 a.m. He said he was fine but would not open the door.

A few hours later, another neighbor called 911 to report the fire and Hartsville Fire Department firefighters responded.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Hartsville fire and police departments.
