S.C. Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a wreck that killed one person Tuesday night in Darlington County.

A 14-year-old boy from Hartsville was driving a 2000 four-door Pontiac west on Philadelphia Road, about six miles south of Hartsville, at 10:25 p.m. when the crash happened, S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Paul Brouthers said.

The car ran off the road and flipped several times. The passenger in the car died after being thrown from the vehicle, Brouthers said.

Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified the victim as 25-year-old Billy Joe Smith of Lamar.

It’s not clear what caused the crash, which remains under investigation, Brouthers said.
