FLORENCE -- The first of three Urban Planning and Development Department community workshops will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the auditorium at Poynor Adult Education Center, 301 S. Dargan St, Florence.

“The Urban Planning and Development Department welcomes all interested parties to attend,” said department director Phillip Lookadoo. “This is the first in a series of three community workshops to invite the public’s input in the development of the city of Florence’s Comprehensive Plan.”

The purpose of the workshop is to invite comments relating to the future planning issues of Florence. These will then be used to prepare a statement of community vision and guiding principles for the plan.

The subsequent workshops will allow participants to be involved in laying out the future, including plans for new development and redevelopment, transportation improvements, community appearance and the necessary actions and priorities.

“The Comprehensive Plan is a necessary and important document to help guide the future growth and economic development of the Florence community,” Lookadoo said. “The plan will include an identification of key planning issues, followed by goals and specific action recommendations.”

Lookadoo said the plan will include chapters devoted to:

  • The pattern and character of development and redevelopment.
  • The means of community mobility including streets, sidewalks, trails and transit.
  • Adequate and affordable housing and neighborhood integrity
  • Strategies for growing and strengthening the economy.
  • An update of the downtown master plan and planning for the fringe and adjacent neighborhood areas.
  • And an implementation framework and action agenda.

“This plan will be used to determine how the city may best leverage its assets and thus create a better quality of life for its residents,” Lookadoo said. “The plan is a reflection of the community’s desires for its future. It is essential, therefore, for residents and stakeholders alike to participate in this and two subsequent community workshops.”

The Wednesday workshop will begin in the auditorium with an overview of the plan and the plan development process. This will be followed by a series of small group breakout discussions to explore different approaches to managing growth, enhancing the community’s appearance, improving or sustaining housing and neighborhood conditions and securing a high quality of life.

“Every individual will have the opportunity to share his or her thoughts and ideas about the present and future of Florence and how best to achieve our vision,” Lookadoo said.

Call the Urban Planning and Development Department at (843) 665-2047 for questions about the Community. Workshop or the Comprehensive Plan.
