A Johnsonville man is being held on a $150,000 bond after police said he stabbed his estranged wife in the mouth with a kitchen knife, Johnsonville Police Chief Ron Douglas said.
Buster Joe Haywood, 39, of 708 Cowhead Road is charged with assault and battery with intent to kill, Florence County Detention Center booking reports show.
The incident happened Aug. 20 at the victim’s home in Springhill Apartments when the suspect came to visit the couple’s children, Douglas said. When an argument ensued, the suspect walked into the kitchen and returned with a knife which he used to stab the victim in the mouth and back.
The victim suffered serious injury to her gums and lost several teeth as a result of the attack, Douglas said.
The suspect fled into Williamsburg County after the incident, but was found that day by deputies and police and arrested, the chief said.
Douglas said the suspect has been arrested before for assaulting the same victim who had a restraining order on him at the time of the stabbing.
Haywood remains in custody at the jail in Effingham.
