The Taste of Society Hill returns and will once again be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Sept. 17 at the historic Japonica Hall, home of Michal and Dick Baird, in Society Hill. The Taste is a popular event that brings people from all over the Pee Dee to this historic town. Proceeds from the event are used to beautify the town.
The Taste will feature samples of food and beverages prepared by local chefs and cooks, including Carolina Rice Plantation, Boss Hog’s and Sandy Ocean BBQ of Bennettsville. Others sharing their specialties will be cooking experts Ed Saleeby, Ann Marie Pennington of Morningside in Hartsville and Jamie Morphis of Carolina Bank in Darlington. The buffet will include such items as frog legs, fish, BBQ, and a wide variety of desserts.
Entertainment during the event will be by The Firenze Quartet of the Florence Symphony Orchestra.
The 2008 event saw attendance upwards of 1,000 people.
Tickets are on sale in Society Hill at town hall, at Carolina Bank and at Funderburke Insurance; in Darlington at the Darlington Chamber of Commerce; and in Hartsville at Black Creek Arts Council and Burry Bookstore. Cost is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Guests must be at least 18 to attend.
Japonica Hall was built in 1896 by prominent railroad business man Major James J. Lucas. The house is named for the camellia japonicas of which Major Lucas had some of the earliest plants in the county.
Founded in 1748, Society Hill is located on Hwy 52/401 and is the site of the first settlement in Darlington County.
