The start of the school year is just around the corner for many students in Lumberton, and city leaders hope to start the school year on a positive note.
This weekend, they're hosting the Precinct Five Citywide Back to School Community Day. The event features a variety of fun and games for the kids, as well as food and music.
On Saturday, city leaders gave away school supplies to 1,000 kids, including rising fifth grader Star Jordan, who won a bookbag full of just about everything a student could need.
"It's great. I get to go to school, and I have a lot of stuff," she said.
Providing students with the necessary materials was one of the goals of the event, which city officials created after several recent murders in the area. Lumberton city councilman John Cantey said he also hopes it will provide an uplifting message.
"We're praising our children, praising the lord, and we're trying to teach them fellowship and praise that, hey, we can come together and we don't have to have violence," he said.
Parents say it's an effective way of helping the kids.
"Definitely good for the kids' esteem, to let them know that someone's out there that does care about them," said Star Jordan's father, Melvin.
The event wraps up Sunday with a church service at McCormick Chapel AME Church in Lumberton.
