Marion School District 2 held its annual Back-to-School Rally on Aug.13, in the Mullins High School Gymnasium.
The event was enjoyed by more than 700 residents in the community.
Live entertainment was provided throughout the two-hour event by a local gospel group called Voices for Harmony. In addition to the music, dancers from the Justine Roberts’ dance studio performed several lively numbers to get the crowd excited.
The Marion County Library provided students with fun activities and Dretta-Lewis Myers displayed her artwork at the front entrance of the gymnasium.
All the schools within the district distributed information pertinent to their individual school, answered parents’ questions, and provided students with pencils and paper and fun school-related items such as drink bottles, yo-yo’s, little footballs and basketballs.
The Mullins Early Childhood Center set up four stations that engaged students in arts & crafts, painting, reading, listening and Lego building.
More than 300 students were given free book bags, sponsored by Macedonia United Methodist Church, Liberty Fellowship International, Senator Kent Williams, Anderson Brothers Bank, Farm Bureau, Mullins Chamber of Commerce, Allen Floyd, and Ace Hardware.
Other school-related items such as notebook paper, folders, tablets, rulers, glue, crayons, pens, pencils, etc. were given out at tables that were sponsored by Anderson Brothers Bank, Mullins Police
Department, Select Health of SC, Friends and Alumni of Palmetto High School, The Guardian Ad Litem Program, Marion County Sheriff ‘s Office, Trinity Behavioral Care, SC Legal Aid Services, Marion County Adult Education, Marion County Technical College, Golden Leaf Festival, Science South, Department of Juvenile Justice, Sandy’s Kitchen, Farm Bureau Insurance, Walgreens Pharmacy, US Census Bureau, Macedonia United Methodist Church and Liberty Fellowship International.
Tickets were given to people as they entered the gymnasium and prizes valued at $25 or more, which were donated by Liberty Fellowship International, Malcolm’s Service Station, Select Health of SC, Sandy’s Kitchen, Mattie’s Attic, BiLo and Piggly Wiggly, were given away every fifteen minutes.
Each person who “manned” a table at the rally (excluding school personnel) was given a box of Russell Stover’s assorted chocolate candy, sponsored by Wal-Mart, as a token of appreciation for their support to the district.
Hot dogs w/chili, chips, drinks and cookies were served in the cafeteria throughout the event. Drinks and cookies were sponsored by Walgreen’s Pharmacy and Subway Restaurant.
The 2009-10 school year for Marion School District 2 is off to a great start, evident by the great success of its back-to-school rally. Marion School District 2 attributes the success of the rally to its positive working relationship with the local businesses, government agencies, civic organizations, churches and residents.
