After a five-year process and repeated applications the City of Mullins Fire Department finally acquired a new truck to the fleet of six. Local officials say the new addition is top of the line.
“We have an orientation that’s going to last about four or five hours and a lot of training,” Chief Robert Stetson said this past Tuesday, while fire fighters inspected the new water tanker and pumper truck.
It’s the first new truck since 2004, he said.
“It’s phenomenal,” he said, adding the truck hauls 2,500 gallons of water, more than twice of the amount of the vehicles in possession. Stetson said the truck will be asset.
“We sent the specs in and took a year to build,” Stetson said, adding the truck was also featured in a convention held in Myrtle Beach this past July.
Stetson credits the former Mayor Kenneth McDonald and Mayor Pam Lee’s administration.
“The truck is great for areas that are short on water supply and instead of hauling water the truck can pump water,” Stetson said.
Training officer Wayne Collins said staff members were to take part in a driving training session over the weekend. S.C. Fire Academy instructor Billy Floyd was also on hand to view the new truck and said the new equipment will be a good upgrade for the department.
“It’s a good investment for the city and the truck serves a dual purpose,” City Administrator Pete Rogers said.
“We’re going to train and get everyone where they need to be to operate this truck with efficiency, safely and serve the citizens of Mullins,” Collins said.
