While classes at area schools are resuming all around the state, the usual joys accompanying journeys back to the halls of academia, some might not be so excited to see the new year begin.
Williamsburg County District’s School Board had a rather interesting summer vacation. Not only did they pass a deficit budget but also the uncertainty surrounding the future of Superintendent Ralph Fennell still hangs over the District like a gloomy cloud.
The cancelation of Kingstree Middle School’s single gender program was the latest District move, swift and perhaps done with too much haste. To think that summer is supposed to be a “slow time” for school boards raises a frightening thought; now that school is back in session, parents will more than likely start attending school board meetings more regularly. That means the already crowded council chamber on School Street in Kingstree will possibly become even more so, meaning longer meetings and more intense debate, if that is possible.
If any of the last couple of meetings were any indication, as the year rolls on the Board will not doubt be holding some more meetings that would make members of British Parliament proud.
Regardless, readers of The Weekly Observer can rest assured that coverage of these events will continue and improve as the months go on. With more issues sure to come up as the fall gets into full swing, the wild ride that is the Williamsburg County District School Board will surly plunge ahead with just as much gusto as it did this summer.
Hopefully, citizens are fans of roller coasters. But bring a vomit bag…
