Motorist falls asleep, strikes pole in Lake City

A driver fell asleep behind the wheel of his car Saturday evening and crashed into a nearby light pole at U.S. 52 and Main Street in Lake City.

A driver fell asleep behind the wheel of his car Saturday evening and crashed into a nearby light pole, according to emergency officials at the scene of the accident.

The accident occurred at the intersection of U.S. 52 and Main Street, near the Shell gas station.

The driver and a passenger was transported by EMS to a local hospital for injuries, emergency officials said. Crews from Progress Energy arrived at the scene to repair damages to the light pole, and traffic on U.S. 52 was delayed while crews evaluated the scene of the accident.

Several officers from Lake City Police Department responded to the accident as well as firefighters from Lake City Fire Deparment.
