The Marion Lions Club has donated 10 books dealing with Diabetic Education to the Marion County Library. These bocks will be available to the general public at the library.
All Lions Clubs has as one of its major service projects Sight Preservation and eye care.
Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in our country. Here in South Carolina approximately 321,246 adults are diagnosed with diabetes. African Americans have twice the prevalence than Whites.
The total direct costs of hospitalizations and emergency room visits were over $8.5 billion in 2005. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in South Carolina, claiming 1,136 lives in 2006.
In 2007, there were 166 hospitalizations for Diabetes in Marion County for all ages. There were an additional 1447 hospital discharges with diabetes-related conditions in Marion County in 2007. Also, there were 158 emergency room (ER) visits for diabetes as the primary diagnosis, among which 118 (75 percent) were by African-American patients. An estimated 2331 adults (9.1 percent of adults) in Marion County suffer annually from Diabetes.

The Marion Lions Club encourages the people to have regular check-ups to detect diabetes in the early stages to prevent the loss of limbs or eyesight.
