The Surfside Beach players supported Tammy Gulledge as she battled breast cancer throughout their championship season.
Gulledge was told by doctors she is free of cancer, earlier this week.
For Gulledge, the championship victory last night was the culmination of what she calls an incredible week.
"It was, oh my gosh, it was so exciting….I’m so proud of them,” Gulledge said.
Gulledge was diagnosed with breast cancer in January and has had 16 chemotherapy treatments.
“I came out on top and I’m cancer free and the boys came out on top when they won their sportsmanship award as well as the national trophy,” Gulledge said.
During their journey to winning that trophy, the players wore hats with Gulledge's initials (TG) and a pink ribbon promoting breast cancer awareness.
As the team supported Gulledge, she says her battle still took its toll on her two children, especially Cole.
“That was the toughest, was my precious, 11-year-old, little boy not wanting to look me in the eye because he was so upset,” Gulledge said.
But now that she's cancer free and Cole’s team won the championship, Gulledge says she looks forward to rooting for him during many more championship games.
“Cancer makes you let go of your inhibitions. So, I was a very proud, bald woman,” Gulledge said.
