The mayor’s seat in Myrtle Beach is up for re-election this November. Current Mayor John Rhodes tells News 13 he will be running for re-election again this year.
“I’ve had four great years of having an opportunity to represent the people of Myrtle Beach whether it was the business community or the citizens,” said Rhodes on Monday, “so I would like to do that again and if I have done the job that they think I should've done then hopefully they'll put me back in office."
The mayor has been surrounded by much controversy ever since the new biker ordinances went into effect and now the recent one sales tax.
Rhodes said he knows not everyone can be pleased but there are already successes seen as a result of the ordinances and the new tax.
“There are families coming back that waited until biker rallies were over,” explained Rhodes, "we would not have the funds to advertise with if the one cent tax had not been passed which allowed the chamber to go ahead and use the line of credit and we went from 25 cities doing T.V commercials to 45 cities.”
Some who didn't favor Rhodes after the city put restrictions on bike rallies came up with groups such as “Help Eliminate Lousy Politicians” and “A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments” to let the mayor know they weren't happy with the changes.
Rhodes however said that type of attitude still doesn't deter him from wanting to run for his seat again, knowing very well the ultimate decision is in the hands of the citizens.
"I've enjoyed the position I've got and I've enjoyed the opportunity to represent the homeowner and also the business community in our town but most important, I'm really excited about the fact that we've been able to bring back to our community, respect," Rhodes said.
Three other council seats are also opened for re-election. Councilman Wayne Gray confirmed to News 13 that he is also once again running for one of the three seats opened.
Filing period for this year's election starts on Aug. 20 and ends Sept. 4.
