Williamsburg County School District has confirmed one positive case of H1N1 “swine” flu at Kingstree Elementary School.
The school district is continuing to follow the recommendations set forth by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control, according to a press release issued by the district Friday afternoon.
According to DHEC reports, it’s the first case of swine flu reported in Williamsburg County this year.
The number of cases recorded by DHEC as of July 28, the most up-to-date-data available, in the the rest of the Pee Dee, by county, is Chesterfield, four; Clarendon, one; Darlington, two; Florence, five; Lee, one, Marion one; and Marlboro, five.
Darlington’s two confirmed cases were recorded the week of July 22-28, as were five of Florence’s confirmed cases, according to DHEC, which by federal law cannot release details about individual cases.
“It is important to remember that the H1N1 virus is still present and actively spreading in South Carolina,” DHEC Public Information Officer Jim Beasley said via e-mail. “This virus continues to behave unlike most influenza viruses, which die in the summer heat. Therefore, we continue to monitor its movement in our state, and watch its behavior as it spreads across the countries south of the equator.”
The CDC recommends that the primary means to reduce the spread of influenza, in schools, should focus on early identification of ill students and staff; staying home when ill; and good cough and hand hygiene etiquette.
