A Darlington man faces additional charges in the death of his infant daughter.
David Rush, 19, of 1634 Shilow Drive Lot 24 in Darlington, was charged with homicide by child abuse Tuesday after an autopsy revealed the baby died as a result of shaken baby syndrome, according to a press release issued Tuesday by Darlington County Sheriff’s Capt. Andy Locklair.
“Investigators obtained information that Rush was responsible for the death of the child,” the press release said.
The specific nature of the child’s injuries and other details of the investigation are not being released because of the ongoing probe.
Rush and the baby’s 17-year-old mother Heather Pingitord, also of 1634 Shilow Drive Lot 24 in Darlington, were charged with unlawful conduct toward a child by a legal custodian last week soon after their daughter Victoria Nikole Rush was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The baby was transported by EMS and arrived at the hospital with no signs of life, sheriff’s officials said.
Victoria’s body was sent to Newberry for an autopsy, after which Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee ruled the child’s death was not accidental. A magistrate denied bond for Rush and Pingitord on the unlawful conduct charge. Rush will have to appear before a circuit court judge for a bond hearing on the homicide by child abuse charge. The two remain in custody at the Darlington County Detention Center.
