DARLINGTON — Darlington County drug agents spent Tuesday afternoon scouring an area of Hartsville after officials found 12 marijuana plants during an eradication operation.
Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd led the operation by helicopter and spotted the plants along New Hopewell Road in Hartsville from the air.
“The summer months are the biggest growing months for the illegal plant,” Byrd said. “The best way to find them is with an aircraft. I went up this morning with the pilot and flew several locations. This was one of the last locations of the day.”
Some of the plants were as big as 8 feet tall. All of them will be destroyed, Byrd said.
The eradication team continued the search by ground after the plants were discovered. No arrests were made immediately, but the investigation continues.
Anyone with information about the growth, manufacture or sale of illegal drugs in Darlington County should call the sheriff’s office at (843) 398-4501 or Crime Stoppers of the Pee Dee at (888) CRIME SC (274-6372). Callers need not reveal their identities.
