As part of Operation Safe Campus, initiated last year to improve safety and reduce crime on the campus of Coastal Carolina University, a surprise sweep was made by law enforcement personnel Thursday in search of illegal drugs and weapons.
Searching with four dog teams through the common living areas and parking lots of campus residence halls, law enforcement personnel discovered one weapon as well as marijuana and alcohol. The procedure has resulted in the arrest of two students who were transported to J. Reuben Long Detention Center. Seven other students and one person who is not a student were cited on various charges. The Department of Public Safety is seeking information on two other students on various charges. All of the students are being referred through the University Judicial System for review.
“This proactive measure was undertaken in an effort to set the highest possible standards in campus safety,” said University President David A. DeCenzo. “Students and parents should know that Coastal Carolina University has a zero tolerance policy for drugs and weapons, and we will continue to be vigilant in making this campus safe.”
Operation Safe Campus was directed by the Coastal Carolina University Department of Public Safety in cooperation with the Horry County Police Department, Conway Police Department, North Myrtle Beach Police Department and the 15th Circuit Solicitor’s Office.
