Mental Health Awareness program offers fun, games

Dear Editor,
Each year we the staff at Springville-McMillan-Rans-Centenary celebrates Mental Health Month with our annual Mental Health Awareness Day at the Springville Head Start Center at 2513 Springville Road, across from Turner’s B&P station, on U.S. Highway 76, Marion.
This year, we are looking for more community participation from our friends and families and hoping more will come out and help us celebrate Mental Health Month. May is National Mental Health Month and as part of the community we would like for everyone to know that this is the time to enjoy yourself and to have a day of fun and games.
This year, we will be celebrating on May 2, beginning at 10 a.m. and ending at 2 p.m. Everyone is invited to come and enjoy themselves.
We would like to hear from you by April 24, if you want to set up a table or be put on the program. Call (843) 423-7593 or (843)-423-3903.
We will be having refreshments, door prizes, face painting, hat making, singing, dancing, a Mary Kay demonstration, offering insurance information, nutrition guidance, a puppet show, offering information on TB, HIV/AID and housing. There is much more.

“Evening of Music” spotlights local talent
Dear Editor,
What soul can resist feeling uplifted as the drab winter landscape gives way to spring-green, splashed by sprays of purple and hot pink? How better to celebrate this annual concert of color than a concert of music and dance, drawing from our very own exceptional local talent?
Arts Council Marion County presents just such an event on April 25, at 7 p.m. in the Marion County Opera House auditorium on West Godbold Street in Marion.
A $5 ticket admits you to an “Evening of Music,” featuring performers you’ve come to admire individually, all gathered for one show. There will be Master of Ceremonies and singer, Bill Nelson; father/daughter vocalists Morris and Nikki Ward; the Baptist Men’s Quartet with Steve Mace, Edgar Hite, Norman Foxworth and Morris Ward; the Justine Roberts Dance Group; vocalist Misty Amber Brigman of the Brady family; MBC singers Shirley and Steve Mace in solo and duet; Pastor Joe Long of First United Methodist Church accompanied by his wife Kathy Jo, singer/musician, on guitar, with Biblical storytelling and song; and Beth Klauber and Kathy Jo playing bells.
What better way to spend this Saturday evening than with friends, at the Opera House, immersed in joyful sound? See you there!

It’s necessary to clean up after your pets
Dear Editor,
I, along with everyone who takes advantage of our beautiful walking path (in Marion), am very thankful to have a great place to exercise. On a daily basis I see more and more people taking their strides, day and night.
Also, there is an increase of dog owners bringing their dogs. As a dog owner who chooses not to take her dog along with her, I am asking those other dogs owners, who walk the path and the neighboring areas, to please be courteous and pick up and dispose of what their dogs leave behind.
It is not only unpleasant for humans, it is also bad for the ground water. As the weather grows warmer it will become a larger issue. Let's be conscious of our fellow exercisers and neighbors.
Let's keep Marion as beautiful and clean as it can possibly be.
Thank you.
Virginia Woodhouse
