A North Myrtle Beach Public Safety officer is this year's winner of the J. P. Strom Award, given to the student with the highest cumulative point total on written tests during the nine-week South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
Officer Elijah G. Wells says the opportunity to give back to the community is what compelled him to get involved with law enforcement. He is a 2003 graduate of East Carolina Unviersity.
This year's new class of officers, 41 in all, graduated on April 17.
All law enforcement officers in the state have to graduate from the academy.
